Apologetics
Apologetics is the defense of the faith, giving reasons for what you believe. Christian apologetics is presenting evidence for the validity of Christianity. After reading chapter one of Defending Your Faith by Dr. Mark Bird, I was kind of relieved that Dr. Bird suggested giving the gospel before apologetics. I have been trying to balance using apologetics in evangelism. I think it makes sense to present the gospel first and if the person has objections, to then answer them. It seems that apologetics is not popular amongst Christians. However, there are many people who have objections to Christianity, which need to be answered. When we use apologetics, we are removing intellectual objections that the skeptic has between him and Christ. By answering a skeptic’s objections, we can move them closer on the road to Christ. According to Josh McDowell, there are three reasons why people reject Christ; 1) Ignorance 2) Pride 3) Moral Problem. We need to answer everyone who asks a reason for the hope that is within us (1 Peter 3:15). Even if the skeptic is proud, we should answer his objections just to eliminate the intellectual stumbling blocks. Then we can get to the real issue, sin. Apologetics also strengthens Christians in their faith. When we study apologetics, it will give us more confidence to answer objections to Christianity. Christians need to have reasons for why they believe that Christianity is true. I try to encourage Christians not only to share their faith but also to study apologetics. We are commanded to “Sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence”
1 Peter 3:15.
