Misconceptions about Christianity

Chapter 2 of Defending Your Faith discusses four misconceptions that skeptics have concerning Christianity. Misconception 1: “Christianity must be proven scientifically; I’ll accept Christianity when you prove it with the scientific method.” Christianity cannot be proven scientifically. When someone tries to prove something using the scientific method, they do so by having a controlled environment, where an experiment is repeated over and over again and observations are recorded. The central claims to Christianity are the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. We cannot take Jesus kill and bury him and see if he resurrects again and again. Historical events are unrepeatable. Therefore, we cannot prove historical events using the scientific method. One must use the legal historical method of proof to prove an historical event. Apologetics is the defense of the faith, giving reasons for what you believe. Christian apologetics is presenting evidence for the validity of Christianity. After reading chapter one of  Defending Your Faith  by Dr. Mark Bird, I was kind of relieved that Dr. Bird suggested giving the gospel before apologetics. I have been trying to balance using apologetics in evangelism. I think it makes sense to present the gospel first and if the person has objections, to then answer them.  It seems that apologetics is not popular amongst Christians. However, there are many people who have objections to Christianity, which need to be answered. When we use apologetics, we are removing intellectual objections that the skeptic has between him and Christ. By answering a skeptic’s objections, we can move them closer on the road to Christ. According to Josh McDowell, there are three reasons why people reject Christ; 1) Ignorance 2) Pride 3) Moral Problem. We need to answer  everyone  who asks a reaso
